Tools for Environmental Management; A Guide for First Nations
First Nations in Alberta are facing a growing number of opportunities
and challenges related to environmental management. Increasing resource
and infrastructure development in the province along with concerns about
the long term health and sustainability of the environment have led many
First Nations to look for opportunities to become more involved in the
environmental management decisions that affect their communities. As a
means of increasing capacity at the community level, this manual was
developed as a tool that could be used by First Nations when making
environmental management decisions; both on Reserve, and within traditional
territories.
This manual is primarily written for First Nations leaders, administrators
and resource people seeking information and options for managing their
environmental resources. Specifically the manual aims to answer the
following key questions:
- What are some of the key environmental management tools and approaches
needed for sustainable resource management?
- How have these tools and approaches been used by other First Nations in Alberta?
- How can these tools and approaches be useful for my community?
- What are some of the issues and challenges associated with
implementing these tools at the Reserve level?
- How can I learn more?
