Storage Tank Regulations Information

First Nations (AB) Technical Services Advisory Group (TSAG) and Environment Canada (EC) have recently held afternoon workshops across Alberta regarding the new Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations (the Storage Tank Regulations) which apply to storage tank systems located on Aboriginal land and federal land. For more information please go to www.ec.gc.ca/rs-st.

The Storage Tank Regulations require that owners and/or operators of storage tank systems:
  • Identify storage tank systems to Environment Canada. Fuel cannot be delivered to tanks that are not identified by June 12, 2010.
  • Stop using tanks or piping that leaks and either fix them or remove them
  • Report spills
  • Conduct leak detection on storage tank systems
  • Prepare an emergency plan
  • Design the transfer area to contain spills
  • Have new systems installed by certified installers and old systems removed by certified removers
  • Keep records about the tank systems
